On Thursday, October 19, 2023, the Department of Biochemistry hosted its fifth annual student research showcase: Engelpalooza! The event was held outside on the Fralin Lawn from 9:30AM-2:30 PM.

More than 130 people came by to learn about the research being conducted by our students! We had 23 presenters (17 undergraduate and 6 graduate) share their expertise on a range of topics, including: computational modeling and data analytics, pathogenesis and vector-borne disease, metalloenzymes and methanogenesis, protein-protein interactions, molecular plant physiology, and inclusive laboratory design.

Each poster session was opened by biochemistry alumnus, Dr. Daniel Ragheb ('11). His keynote remarks highlighted his time at Virginia Tech and his career journey. Attendees were also treated to a visit from the HokieBird and live science demonstrations of Oxford Nanopore Sequencing and Virtual Reality Molecular Modeling.

Engelpalooza is made possible by a grant from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) Inclusive Excellence program. Special thanks to the Biochemistry Department, as well as the department's Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee, for their continued support and involvement.

We hope to see you in fall at our next Engelpalooza!
